ATL 27L blue baffle foam (Diesel / Methanol / Water Use)
Description
This ATL blue flexible baffle foam for diesel/methanol/water prevents fuel sloshing in the tank, which could cause the vehicle to become unbalanced.
FUEL COMPATIBILITY
- Most fuel system components are not resistant to all types of fuel. It is therefore essential to identify the intended fuel or mixture (gasoline, diesel, alcohol, etc.) before purchasing the equipment.
Foam baffle materials, in particular, are affected by alcohol, as are some gasoline tank materials and components.
TYPE OF SAFETY FOAM
- Gas tank foam is a “cross-linked” or open-cell material that resembles a sponge.
When used inside a tank, the foam prevents explosions, controls fuel splashing, and absorbs some of the impact energy. The foam should never be handled when wet with fuel as a surface fire could occur.
For methanol, diesel and water, ATL recommends using blue foam. Any amount of alcohol in a fuel mixture will reduce the life and effectiveness of the safety foam.
For hydrocarbon fuels, it is recommended to use ATL yellow foam, as it can withstand reasonable exposure to homogeneous mixtures of hydrocarbons with 5% to 85% ethanol (ethyl alcohol) [E5 to E85].
ATL strongly recommends inspecting the tank foam every 12 months and replacing any foam that is softened, flaking, or “gummy.”
In any case, after 10 years, it is strongly recommended to replace the foam with new foam.
TEMPERATURE
- ATL racing tanks are deformable to prevent impact and perforation.
Lower temperatures can limit deformability and therefore reduce the effectiveness of the tank. Most ATL competition fuel tanks are designed for normal competition environments from 0º to 50ºC (30ºF to 120ºF). Use below -30ºC (-20ºF) may reduce performance. The maximum intermittent heat exposure temperature is 60ºC (160ºF).
REMOVING THE FOAM
- All tanks must be purged and rendered inert before being inspected, disassembled, or stored. Use caution when removing the foam, as its pores retain approximately 2% of the fuel capacity. Once removed, the foam must be air-dried and the tank must be cleaned.
The foam can be cleaned with water and reinstalled once dry, or replaced with new foam.
STORAGE
- When storing a tank, empty it completely, wash it with soap and water, dry the inside, close all openings, and store it in a dark, warm, dry place.
