The head restraint system is mandatory in almost all motor sports governed by the FFSA and the FIA and will be mandatory in UFOLEP from 2017.
The HANS system holds your head in place during a frontal blow, thereby reducing the risk of fracture of the cervical vertebrae and muscle strain.
In the guide below, GT2i will help you distinguish between the two best-known restraint systems sold on our website, namely the HANS and the HYBRID SYSTEM.

Approval and safety:

The use of a frontal restraint system is mandatory for both the driver and codriver to ensure maximum safety.
Two types of approvals are available:

- The FIA 8858-2002 standard, which has no date of expiry. Please note: if your restraint system is FIA 8858-2002 approved, it can only be compatible with a helmet that has HANS post anchors with the same approval! Only FIA 8858-2002 and FIA 8860-2004 helmets are compatible with a HANS FIA 8858-2002.
- The FIA 8858-2010 standard also has no end date for homologation. Please note: if your restraint system is FIA 8858-2010 approved, it can only be compatible with a helmet with HANS post anchors of the same approval. Only FIA 8858-2010 and FIA 8860-2010 helmets are compatible with an FIA 8858-2010 HANS.
Each head restraint system must have a visible homologation label to be valid during competition.

HANS and SYSTEM HYBRID:

Regardless of the brand of your head restraint system, weight remains the most important criterion as it can quickly weigh on your shoulders and increase fatigue and discomfort during a competition.
The HANS system is placed on your shoulders and connected to your helmet using a strap and clip system (also named anchor system).
The HYBRID SYSTEM from Simpson rests on your shoulders and is also strapped to your waist, allowing for ease of use and greater freedom of movement with less feeling of restraint. Its 'Quick Release' system allows you to quickly detach your helmet while it is still in place in your car.

What size should I get for my HANS?

To choose a restraint system that is the right size, won't get in the way while driving, and fits perfectly in your car, you need to check two essential criteria:

- The size and width of your neck for your HANS system and your chest circumference for the HYBRID SYSTEM.

How do you know what measurements to take?
To measure the width of your neck, use a tape measure and measure around your neck, then refer to the size connection chart to see which HANS size you need.
For your chest measurement, use a tape measure and place it under your armpits to measure around your chest. Be sure to take all measurements in racing conditions, wearing your underwear and FIA suit, so that the measurements are as accurate as possible, then refer to the size chart to see which size is right for you.

- The angle of the user in relation to your car is the second important criterion for choosing the right HANS system.
How can you determine this angle?
GT2i has thought of everything and prepared a chart below with all the information you need to choose your HANS.

Sizing chart for the HANS System:

Colar size (cm) Size
Lower than 15" (38cm) S
From 15 to 18" (38 to 45.5cm) M

Chest size (cm) Size

For further information:

For even greater comfort and practicality, GT2i recommends using the many accessories available on our website, such as shoulder pads, slippery strap kits, the 'Quick Release' system, HANS post anchors and harness guide.
We also recommend using the FIA approved 3“/2” harness, which is specially adapted to the width of the HANS..
