## Description

De helm voor de autosport behoort tot de essentiële beschermingsuitrusting van de coureur en de bijrijder. Bij rally’s, op het circuit, bij heuvelklimmen, bij autocross of tijdens een trackday draagt hij bij aan de bescherming van het hoofd bij een botsing en moet hij voldoen aan de veiligheidseisen die eigen zijn aan elke discipline.
De keuze voor een autosporthelm hangt niet alleen af van de goedkeuring. Ook het ontwerp (integraal of open), het gewicht, de ventilatie, de pasvorm en de compatibiliteit met veiligheidsuitrusting spelen een belangrijke rol.
GT2i biedt een selectie rally- en circuithelmen, met integraal- en jetmodellen van gespecialiseerde fabrikanten zoals Stilo, Bell en Sparco, afgestemd op de verschillende niveaus van de autosport.
Volledige helmen en jethelmen voor de competitie
De integraalhelm onderscheidt zich door zijn kinbescherming die het onderste deel van het gezicht beschermt. Deze helm wordt vooral gebruikt bij circuitwedstrijden, in eenzitters en in open voertuigen, waar de beschermingseisen hoger kunnen zijn.
De jethelm, of open helm, laat het gezicht vrij. Deze helm is zeer gangbaar in de rallysport, biedt een goed zicht en vergemakkelijkt de communicatie tussen coureur en bijrijder. Veel modellen zijn uitgerust met een microfoon en oortjes om te communiceren via een rally-intercom.
De keuze tussen deze twee ontwerpen hangt af van de beoefende discipline, het sportreglement en de voorkeuren van de coureur op het gebied van comfort en zicht.
FIA- en Snell-goedkeuringen voor racehelmen
De FIA- en Snell-goedkeuringen leggen technische eisen vast waaraan helmen moeten voldoen om gecertificeerd te worden.
Tot de normen die in de autosport worden gehanteerd, behoren met name de FIA 8859-2015-, FIA 8859-2024- en FIA 8860-2018-goedkeuringen, evenals de Snell SA2020- en SA2025-normen.
Deze homologaties worden niet noodzakelijkerwijs in alle disciplines geaccepteerd. Sommige wedstrijden schrijven een specifieke FIA-norm voor, terwijl andere reglementen bepaalde Snell-homologaties kunnen erkennen.
Het is ook van essentieel belang om rekening te houden met de uiterste geldigheidsdata van de goedkeuringen, die kunnen veranderen afhankelijk van de sportreglementen. Een helm in goede staat kan dus niet langer worden toegestaan in een wedstrijd wanneer de goedkeuring ervan niet langer wordt erkend.

Helmen die compatibel zijn met HANS- en FHR-systemen
Het HANS-systeem, dat tot de familie van FHR-systemen (Frontal Head Restraint) behoort, is ontworpen om de bewegingen van het hoofd ten opzichte van de romp te beperken bij een plotselinge vertraging.
Voor het gebruik ervan is een helm nodig die is uitgerust met compatibele en goedgekeurde bevestigingspunten, evenals een FHR-systeem en een geschikt harnas.
Sommige FIA-gecertificeerde helmen worden geleverd met geïnstalleerde HANS-bevestigingspunten. Bij andere moet de installatie mogelijk nog plaatsvinden, op voorwaarde dat de fabrikant en de certificering van de helm deze configuratie toestaan.
In veel autosportdisciplines is het dragen van een FHR-systeem verplicht. Het is raadzaam om de vereisten van het geldende reglement te controleren alvorens uw uitrusting te kiezen.
Maat en pasvorm van de racehelm
De maat van de helm is een essentieel criterium om tijdens het rijden een goede pasvorm te garanderen. Een te grote helm kan verschuiven bij het accelereren, remmen of bij botsingen. Omgekeerd kan een te strakke helm aanzienlijk ongemak veroorzaken.
De hoofdomtrek wordt gemeten met een soepel meetlint, dat boven de wenkbrauwen en oren wordt geleid.
De maattabellen en de vorm van de binnenvoering verschillen per fabrikant. Een helm van Stilo, Bell of Sparco met dezelfde maat kan dus een andere pasvorm hebben.
Het wordt aanbevolen om de helm te passen om de pasvorm, de positie van het schuim en het draagcomfort te controleren, vooral wanneer de helm meerdere uren achter elkaar gedragen moet worden.

Materialen, gewicht en comfort van autosporthelmen
Wedstrijdhelmen worden vervaardigd uit verschillende materialen, waaronder glasvezel, composietvezels en koolstof.
Modellen van koolstofvezel of met technische vezels kunnen, afhankelijk van het ontwerp, lichter zijn. Het uiteindelijke gewicht hangt echter ook af van de afmetingen van de schaal, de structuur ervan en de ingebouwde uitrusting.
Het comfort hangt af van verschillende factoren: de pasvorm van het binnenfoam, ventilatie, gezichtsveld, de balans van de helm en de mogelijkheid om geschikte accessoires te gebruiken.
Op het circuit kunnen ventilatie en compatibiliteit met vizieren bijzonder belangrijk zijn. Bij rally's zijn de kwaliteit van het communicatiesysteem en de compatibiliteit met de intercom aanvullende criteria.
Onderhoud en bewaring van een racehelm
Een helm moet regelmatig worden gecontroleerd om de staat van de schaal, de binnenvoering, de kinband en de bevestigingssystemen te controleren.
Het wordt aanbevolen om de helm te bewaren op een plek die beschermd is tegen extreme temperaturen, vocht en chemische stoffen die de onderdelen kunnen beschadigen.
Bij het reinigen moeten de aanbevelingen van de fabrikant worden opgevolgd, met name voor de vizieren en de binnenvoering.
Na een zware botsing kan een helm onzichtbare inwendige schade vertonen. Het gebruik ervan moet dan worden gestaakt en de instructies van de fabrikant moeten worden opgevolgd voordat de helm eventueel weer in gebruik wordt genomen.
