Les disques de frein sur bol sont utilisés pour améliorer ou adapter les systèmes de freinage des voitures sportives et de compétition. Contrairement à un disque monobloc, ils associent une piste de freinage à un bol central distinct, généralement fabriqué en aluminium. Cette architecture permet d'optimiser la masse de l'ensemble et de proposer différentes solutions de fixation adaptées aux contraintes thermiques du freinage.
En rallye, sur circuit ou en course de côte, les freinages répétés soumettent les disques à des températures élevées. Les disques sur bol peuvent répondre à ces contraintes grâce à leur conception, tout en permettant, sur certains modèles, de conserver les étriers d'origine ou de remplacer uniquement les pistes usées.
Conception des disques de frein sur bol aluminium
Un disque de frein en deux parties comprend une piste de friction, généralement en fonte, et un bol assurant sa fixation au moyeu. L'utilisation d'un bol en aluminium permet de réduire le poids de cette partie centrale par rapport à une conception entièrement en fonte, selon les dimensions et les matériaux employés.
Les pistes peuvent être lisses, rainurées ou percées, avec des systèmes de ventilation et des caractéristiques qui varient selon les fabricants. Le choix de la conception dépend notamment des températures de fonctionnement, des sollicitations mécaniques et de l'utilisation prévue.
Réduction des masses non suspendues et comportement du véhicule
La réduction des masses non suspendues constitue l'un des principaux avantages recherchés avec les disques sur bol aluminium. Ces masses comprennent notamment une partie des éléments de suspension, les roues et les composants de freinage.
En diminuant le poids de certains de ces éléments, il est possible de faciliter le travail des suspensions et leur capacité à suivre les irrégularités de la chaussée. Un ensemble plus léger peut également réduire l'inertie en rotation, selon sa répartition de masse.
Le gain réel dépend toutefois des dimensions et de la conception du disque. Un disque sur bol n'est pas systématiquement plus léger que tous les disques monoblocs ou carbone-céramique.
Gestion thermique et disques fixes, semi-flottants ou flottants
Lors d'un freinage intensif, la piste de friction monte en température et se dilate. La liaison entre la piste et le bol influence la manière dont ces contraintes sont transmises à l'ensemble.
Les disques fixes sur bol possèdent une liaison rigide entre les deux éléments. Les montages semi-flottants et flottants autorisent, selon leur conception, certains déplacements contrôlés afin de mieux accompagner la dilatation thermique de la piste.
Ces solutions peuvent contribuer à limiter certaines contraintes mécaniques lors des fortes variations de température. Elles ne garantissent cependant pas l'absence de déformation ou de vibrations, qui dépendent également du montage et des conditions d'utilisation.
Compatibilité avec les étriers de frein d'origine
Certains disques de frein sur bol sont développés pour remplacer directement les disques d'origine, tout en conservant les étriers de frein d'origine. Ils permettent ainsi de modifier la conception du disque sans nécessairement installer un kit gros freins complet.
D'autres références sont destinées à des systèmes de freinage spécifiques, notamment avec des étriers compétition. La compatibilité doit être vérifiée à partir du diamètre, de l'épaisseur, du déport, de l'entraxe et de la géométrie du disque, ainsi que de l'étrier et de l'espace disponible dans la jante.
Les plaquettes de frein doivent également être adaptées à la piste et aux températures de fonctionnement prévues.
Conversion des freins carbone-céramique vers des disques sur bol en fonte
Certains véhicules sportifs sont équipés d'origine de disques de frein carbone-céramique. Pour une utilisation intensive, notamment sur circuit, il existe des solutions permettant de remplacer ces disques par des ensembles sur bol avec pistes en fonte.
Cette conversion carbone-céramique vers fonte peut présenter un intérêt économique lors des remplacements liés à l'usure. Sur certains kits démontables, seule la piste métallique peut ensuite être remplacée, en conservant le bol si son état le permet.
Selon l'application, la conversion peut être réalisée en conservant les étriers d'origine. Elle nécessite toutefois des disques aux dimensions adaptées et des plaquettes compatibles avec les pistes métalliques.
Cette transformation ne garantit pas un allègement : les disques carbone-céramique d'origine peuvent être plus légers que les ensembles en fonte. La compatibilité technique et la conformité à l'usage prévu doivent être vérifiées pour chaque kit.
Remplacement des pistes et entretien des disques sur bol
Sur les disques sur bol démontables, la piste de freinage peut être remplacée indépendamment du bol central. Cette conception permet de conserver une partie de l'ensemble lorsque la piste atteint sa limite d'usure, sous réserve que le fabricant autorise cette opération.
Le remplacement nécessite de contrôler l'état du bol, des fixations et des surfaces d'assemblage. Les couples de serrage, les éventuelles pièces de fixation à usage unique et les procédures de montage doivent respecter les instructions du fabricant.
Après l'installation de disques neufs, il est indispensable d'effectuer un rodage adapté aux disques et aux plaquettes. Pour une utilisation sportive ou compétition, le choix du liquide de frein haute température et le bon état de l'ensemble du circuit hydraulique contribuent également à la constance du freinage.
